Windows 2000/XP SP 2 End of Support Date - Upgrade to Windows 7

What you need to know:

If you currently run any edition of Windows 2000 (Server or Professional) or Windows XP SP 2 - your Microsoft Public Support will end on July 13, 2010.  What this means, according to Microsoft, is that "Microsoft will no longer provide any assisted support or security updates."

Solutions:

  • The most simple, convenient, and beneficial solution to this problem is to upgrade to Windows 7 - and to do it now, while you still have time.  Trigon can help make your migration to Windows 7 go smoothly, and can also ensure that it goes as quickly as possible.
  • Organizations that want to continue using XP and don't want to upgrade to Windows 7 can do so until either the Windows 7 SP1 is released, or until April 22, 2001 - whichever comes first.  At that point, public support for Windows XP SP 3 will also end, and an upgrade will become necessary.
  • Another option is to pay for custom support.  This can be extremely costly, approximately between $200K and $500K a year.  Also, in order to have custom support, there is a condition that you must have an upgrade plan in place.  Lastly, with custom support, you will only get security patches for "critical" vulnerabilities only.
